Caroline's Twenty-second Month

As we inch toward the big 0-2, we continue to be reminded of what a big girl we have. In addition to carrying on full conversations with us, she has begun to make up stories and songs. We like to think she is putting her own little twist on life.

Perhaps our favorite of these scenarios involves the "What does Sesame like?" game, where C asks Sesame (in the womb) if he/she likes something, and mommy is expected to respond affirmatively (jumping) or negatively (turning). A typical conversation goes something like this:

  • C: "Sesame like sommmme... spaghetti?"
  • Mommy: [jumps up and down]
  • C: "Sesame like... ducks?"
  • Mommy: [jumps up and down]
  • C: "Sesame want sommmmme... meatballs?"
  • Mommy (who doesn't want meatballs put into her mouth by a helpful C): [shakes belly from side to side]

She is very sweet to her future bro/sis and usually ends the game with a kiss for Sesame. And sometimes some milk, offered through mommy's tummy. Yeah, I have a couple of wet shirts.

This month brought her first car trip (to Georgia for a wedding), a visit from her Connors grandparents, and 2 trips to the hospital. It was mostly wonderful though, and as you can see from the photos below, she is as happy and healthy as we could have hoped for.

Being 22 months old is hilarious!

*Jelly shoes courtesy of Grandma Beaumont. It should be noted that no jelly shoes were purchased for Caroline's mommy, even back in the early '80s when all the cool kids had them. In fact, Grandma B was known to say that they were "tacky" and it was the only thing that couldn't be purchased with my $1 at Target (they were $0.99). My, how times have changed.

Another Week, Another ER

Last Friday brought another trip to the Emergency Room for the star of our show. For those keeping count, that's 2 ER visits in 7 days.

This trip was different in every way... from hospital location to reason and stay. But we digress... starting from the beginning....

The Sunday after ER visit #1, when everything was great, Daddy had to take a work trip to Florida, and Mommy and CEC were left to fend for ourselves. No problem, right? No problem... at least until Tuesday, when school called Mommy to say that Caroline wasn't "right."

One look at her, and mommy got her to the Dr. who agreed - something wasn't right. But what? Ah... a mystery. He couldn't tell, but told us to hang on... he thought something was on the horizon.

And yeah - he's good. A high fever that night confirmed suspicions. Another trip to the Dr. confirmed strep throat, which led to injections of antibiotic. By Friday, she still hadn't improved much, which led to the aforementioned ER visit to rule out a tonsillar abscess.

No abscess, which meant no surgery (hooray!), but she was still very sick and had to stay at the Hospital on IV antibiotics for 2 days. Not fun for anyone involved, BUT, after a mere 48 hours, she made a full recovery!

A brave face on a sick little girl (notice the scar from ER visit #1)

Poor Noggin'

It has been well established that while Caroline has many, many talents, grace is not one of them. And yeah, yeah, peanut gallery... we know she got it from her mom, so enough of all the snickering out there.

Yesterday brought our first (and *hopefully* last) trip to the ER as a result of said clumsiness. After two calls from daycare (during the 1st, they determined that we didn't need to come, then thought better of it), C's Daddy came and saved the day to get her. A big ol' goose-egg and what appeared to be a cut in the middle of it prompted a call to the pediatrician and the recommended trip to Suburban Hospital.

As far as ER visits go, this one was thankfully pretty uneventful. Even the on-call doc was confused by the cut, which at first glance appeared to need a stitch. Further inspection revealed that it was just a swollen mass with a deep line in it from the corner of the bookcase she hit.

But all is well that ends well - and with a trip to Chipotle!

Introducing...

... for the first time....

Sesame* Connors!

Yep - Caroline is going to be a big sister when we add a co-star to Team Connors in October. The above picture was taken at approximately 13.5 weeks (just like his/her big sis, being uncooperative for heartbeat measuring leads to lots of photos).

We are very excited, and can't wait to meet our little Sesame seed!

*not to worry, "Sesame" is not the name we have chosen for this little one's forever name. It's a longish story, which might be shared in a later post (or if curiosity gets the better of you, let us know and we can fill you in).
