The Updates

Get out your scorecards - here's where we are at 12 months:

She is talking - and not just the Linerese of old (though there is still plenty of that). Her vocabulary is growing by leaps and bounds! Mommy's been keeping a running list of all of the words and sounds she knows. As of her first birthday:

  1. baby
  2. ball
  3. bath
  4. bear
  5. block (bock)
  6. bottle (bobble)
  7. bubble
  8. bye bye
  9. cheese
  10. cow
  11. daddy (dad-n)
  12. dog (dogs, deer, squirrels, and any other smallish neighborhood animal are all dogs)
  13. duck (all birds are ducks)
  14. Elmo (and “Hi Mo!”)
  15. flower (wowweah)
  16. hi
  17. light (ninet)
  18. no no
  19. shoes
  20. [the cow says] ‘moo’
  21. [the sheep says] ‘baa’
  22. turtle (tuuttle)
  23. uh oh
  24. up
  25. waffle (waweul)
  26. whoa
  27. wow
  28. yummy

No walking yet, but we saw her stand alone today at her party at school! Apparently, she has been doing this for days, but true to form, she's keeping her talents under wraps. And of course, she definitely gets around – cruising on furniture, walking with mom and dad, and crawling like a champ.

She is growing perfectly! Her 1 year stats:

  • 32.5” tall (over the 95th percentile)
  • 25 lbs, 1 ounce (right at the 95th)
  • Head circumference of 19” inches (that big noggin is also in the 95th percentile)

She has 10 total teeth, including 2 new molars!

She waves, blows kisses, sings (her favorite song is the ABCs), and dances beautifully.

Perfect, in every way...

Happy Birthday Caroline!

Cue Kool and the Gang...We're having a Celebration!
Though really, Every Day's a Holiday with Caroline, we've managed to stretch this special holiday into a week full of parties!

Celebration #1: Old Family Friends (OFF) Party*
Caroline's Grandma and Grandpa Beaumont were on hand for the big fete. The Party of Five began with an early dinner of some of her most favorite foods - pizza, broccoli, and watermelon - and topped it off with a throwback from mommy's childhood: the yummy Cherry Chip Cake**, made (with some help from Betty Crocker) by mommy herself.
Then it was on to presents! Caroline was a full participant in all package-ripping, and loved all of her clothes, toys, and games. We have one lucky little girl to be blessed with such generous family and friends...

And the tradition of the delicate pink cake continues...

She wasn't a huge fan of the cake (Is this our child??). Maybe next year!

After the birthday girl retired for the evening, the grownups toasted her with some wine from (where else?) Chateau Caroline!

Celebration #2: Partying with her friends.
Next, it was on to cupcakes and cookies with all of her friends at school.
Caroline is lucky to share a birthday and a class with her best buddy Rory (the pretty little girl with the pigtail). These two are already inseparable!
Even mom and dad got to join in on playtime. So much fun!

Look at the baby Caroline!

Bring on the next party!
*This year, the OFF party was just family, though we plan to institute the true OFF tradition next year!
**This delicious, and elusive cake-mix even earned a spot at the Hard to Find Grocer. CEC's Grandma has been looking for it in Tallahassee since 1993, with no luck. And there it was, at our neighborhood Safeway in Bethesda all along.

Showering Lil Elbert

It was party time again this weekend!

We were lucky enough to be part of a baby shower for Lil Elbert and his mom and dad. As you can see, we had lots of fun with presents, food, and kids everywhere!

That's our kind of baby shower!

Caroline's Twelfth Month

Our little girl is ONE!

We're not sure how it happened, but happened it did... Mom and Dad have made it through a whole year of being parents. As Caroline would say, "Wow!"

And what has our star been up to this month? LOTS! In addition to the 4th of July celebration in our nation's capital, she has been taking advantage of the beautiful summer with BBQs and walks and outings and swimming... There's never a dull moment when CEC's around!

She is cruising all around, and talking up a storm. She never meets a stranger, and thinks every day is a party, just for her. More than anything, she brings so much joy to our lives.

We've said it before, and we'll say it again - this has been the best month yet!

Little Librarian

This little girl won't read just anything.

Caroline has learned that sometimes, discovering the good things in life involves digging through the options, tossing the junk on the floor, getting troublemakers out of the way (perhaps with your feet? this is a total-body activity), and of course, tasting a few of the options (not to mention, declaring the victors as "yummy").

Yummy indeed

Mommy Notes:
*Note that, as in all things, this activity was narrated by its actor.
*Note that she did, unprompted, settle on the Baby FSU book!
*Don't those jean shorts kill you? Hilarious.

Bring on the Fireworks!

Happy 4th of July!

The Connors spent the holiday celebrating, as we should, in our Nation's Capital. And really - there is no better place to be! We took an early trip to the National Mall for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, where we got a little culture before sitting down in "Texas" for lunch and a few beers from the Lone Star state.

Caroline opted out of the beer, and stuck to an Independence Day meal of rice, carrots, and all the peas and cheese she could eat.

Quick nap and ready for some grub!

A little playtime...

Next stop was a quick ride on the Mall Carousel.

Um, this is much scarier than it looks. Thank goodness for Mommy riding sidesaddle!

And then another quick ride - less scary and more fun - with daddy before heading home for everyone to rest.

All in all, a perfect day!
